Ecanal is an independent Mexican firm which specializes in providing economic analysis for the private sector.
The company was founded in 1977 by the late Dr. Redvers Opie, who was born and educated in England. In 1948 he became an American citizen and in 1978 a naturalized Mexican. His academic career was developed at Durham, Oxford, and Harvard. He became a Fellow at Oxford, Home Bursar at Magdalen College and later University Lecturer in Economics. He was a founder of Oxford Economic Papers and became its first General Editor; he was also a founder of the Oxford Institute of Economics and Statistics.
From the outbreak of World War II in 1939 until 1946, he was Counselor and Economic Advisor to the British Embassy in Washington, and, under the direction of Lord Keynes, a member of the UK team in charge of negotiations with the US Government on the post-war international organizations, which became the IMF, the World Bank and the GATT. In business, since the initiation of Business International Corporation in New York, Dr. Opie was a Director and stockholder, and a director of City Properties Ltd. in London. In 1959, he conceived the idea of investing the capital of that Company to finance what was the world’s largest office structure, the Pan Am Building at Grand Central Station in New York. He was editor and main contributor to Brookings Institution´s Major Problems in US Foreign Policy.
He was awarded the CMG (Company of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George) in the Birthday Honours of King George VI in 1944. In 1983 he was conferred the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa by the City University of London and was Honorary Visiting Professor in its Business School.
In 1983, Dr. Rogelio Ramírez De la O became the Director General of Ecanal. Dr. Opie, while overseeing operations of the Company, started to edit his correspondence, from 1930 to 1945, with the late Lord Keynes. These were mainly concerned with UK-US negotiations relating to post-war economic institutions. Following the death of Dr. Opie in February 1984, Dr. Ramírez De la O became a partner of Ecanal.
Dr Ramirez de la O was educated at the School of Economics of the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM). He did his PhD in Economics in Cambridge University, with a research on international trade focused on intra-industry and intra-firm trade, giving a prelude of what years later would become Mexico's liberalization of foreign direct investment and NAFTA.
He is currently an advisor to large foreign investment funds with interests in Mexico and an Independent Director of Reaseguradora Patria, S.A. de C.V. and Consorcio Pena Verde, S.A. de C.V.
Ecanal provides a number of services for company subscribers.
The Economic Report on Mexico is a monthly succinct review of the Mexican economy, which analyses output, prices, financing, and the balance of payments. It also contains our own qualified opinion, independent of that of Government or private interest groups, on these trends and on Government policy.
The Special Report on Mexico is a quarterly in-depth analysis on the Budget, the Annual Report of the Bank of Mexico, the President’s State-of-the-Union Report, and a fourth topic to be decided upon during the year. These reports discuss freely Government attitudes and policies and engage in a more extensive analysis than is possible in the monthly reports.
A Quarterly Update for Foreign Business is a brief report on the economy and the political situation, and is at present being sent to a number of subscribers outside Mexico in conjunction with roundtable discussions held twice a year in London and New York.
In Mexico City, Roundtables are monthly working sessions of 2 hours duration held in Mexico City with dates scheduled one year in advance. This is a novel opportunity for subscribers to discuss their own views on the economy and business with other companies and with the authors of the written reports. These meetings have taken place in Mexico since 1977 and are established as a unique forum attended by Presidents and Finance Directors of companies.
